Hinsdale Central’s Avery Anderson has the ball ripped from her grasp by Bolingbrook’s Morgan Tuck. Bolingbrook used a strong third quarter to defeat Hinsdale Central 61-42 in the Class 4A Oswego East Sectional semifinals Monday.
Leading Bolingbrook were Morgan Tuck (21 points, 10 rebounds) and Ariel Massengale (17 points with two three-pointers, four rebounds, four assists).
After going 15-for-31 shooting in the first half, but 3-for-13 from three-point range, the Raiders made eight of 12 shots in the third quarter with Tuck (seven points, three-pointer) and Massengale and Taylor Tuck (four points each) leading the way.
Hinsdale Central (22-10) has been eliminated by the Raiders (23-1) in the sectional the past four years in a row. The previous three losses came in the sectional finals.
The Raiders (25-1), the defending Class 4A state champions, led just 31-26 at halftime but turned up the defensive heat and used four consecutive turnovers, two of them steals, during an 8-0 run that opened a 48-30 advantage. The Raiders led 50-32 after three quarters.
Hinsdale Central senior guard and Stanford-bound Toni Kokenis, the program’s all-time leading scorer, had 20 points with two three-pointers on 8-for-14 shooting.
She also had three rebounds and two assists and scored nine consecutive points for the team between the second and third quarters.
Senior Adabelle Ekechukwu, who set a single-season record for rebounds in a season, had 10 points and nine rebounds. Junior Avery Anderson (eight points) had one of her best games of the season.
With 5:17 left in the third quarter and the Red Devils trailing 40-30, starting junior guard Codi Steinborn injured her head during a scramble for a loose ball and did not return.
